On entry, an interview was performed to determinethe level of physical activity using the TecumsehDesignOn entry, treadmill testing was performed on twoseparate occasions to screen and familiarize thepatients with the testing procedures, but these datawere not used for subsequent analysis. A third treadmilltest was then performed to establish baselinevalues. Subjects were enrolled in groups of four to sixand within each group were paired by the restingankle-to-arm blood pressure ratio in the mostseverely affected leg (severity of vascular disease)and by maximal treadmill walking time (functional impairment). One subject from each pair was randomizedto the control group and the other to thetreatment group (Table 1). Control subjects wereinstructed to maintain their usual level of activity andnot to exercise on a regular basis. Treated subjectswere enrolled in a 12-week exercise program. Treadmilltesting was performed at the midpoint (6 weeks)and on exit (12 weeks) from the program.
