Some studies find evidence for divergence while
others find evidence for convergence (Bailey & Maynor 1987, 1989, Butters 1989,
Labov & Harris 1986). The divergence debate has also been raised in work on the
Hispanic community (Cameron 1998, Poplack 1978). Even though not part of the
original debate, Bailey and Maynor (1987:469) and Rickford et al. (1991:127) suggest
copula absence is a viable criterion for assessing divergence, and I suggest the same
for the variables of past be. For all three ethnic groups for all three variables, the
youngest speakers have the lowest rates; this finding conflicts with studies of AAVE
communities where the rates for copula absence were increasing for the younger speakers.
From these data, the vernacular varieties in Warren County appear to be uniformly
converging towards more standard forms for all three variables.
