Research studies show that students feelless intimidated when working with partners and insmall groups (Berjano, 1987; Chang & Smith, 1991;Gunderson & Johnson, 1980; McGoarty, 1989 as citedin Campbell, 1998). Cooperative learning activitiescan foster active participation, a sense of community,emotional support and provide more opportunities forstudents to use the target language.The purpose of this short-term intervention study wasto test the hypothesis that implementing cooperativelearning opportunities in the university classroom willreduce foreign language classroom anxiety associatedwith communication apprehension.
