In the control of occupational illness or diseases caused by breathing air contaminated
with harmful dusts, fumes, mists, gases, smoke, vapors or oxygen deficient atmospheres.
• When controls either fail or are inadequate to prevent harmful exposure to employees,
appropriate respiratory protection devices shall be provided and shall be used.
• Respiratory protective devices shall be of the type and standard for the contaminant
to which the employee is exposed.
• Written standard operating procedures governing the selection and use of respirators
shall be established in these instances.
