However, the movement of millions of non-Europeans and non-Christians intoEurope in the period after World War II presented a bewildering range of new religiousand ethnic problems. A central issue became whether these racially, ethnically, and religiouslydifferent non-European peoples could somehow embrace a viable Europeanidentity and be accepted by the long-resident populations.Quite aside from the material wealth and relative tolerance of European society, thecharm and beauty of this civilization and the economic productivity and creativity of itspeople have endured in spite of the horrors of the twentieth century. No reputable historycould seek to glide over those horrors – this one certainly does not – but Europe’s beauty,natural and human-made, also deserves recognition, as does the resilience of its people.
