Example of Prejudice in Thailand
• In (northern?) Thailand, there is a word
• “ ชาวเขา” (Chāw k̄heā) for hill tribe.
• This word includes the discriminatory meaning of “the other,” different from us.
• Which is the origin of the word? : they: พวกเขา (Phwk k̄heā) or mountain, hill: ภูเขา (Pḥ ū-k̄heā)
• There is a word “ชาวเรา” (we, us) as a dichotomous word of “ชาวเขา.” Thus, the word “ชาวเขา”
contains the discriminatory meaning of “the other.”
• English word “hill tribe” can also be discriminatory word. So we have to be careful for its
usage.
