the speech community and the individual. As a look at the tables reveals, adding cultural
identity to the mix allows important trends of language variation to emerge for this
rural speech community. The linguistic variation in Warren County correlates with
several categories, including gender, age, and ethnicity. Were these the only independent
variables correlated with the data, then the opportunity for important analyses would
be missed; cultural identity must also be taken into consideration to better understand
the linguistic variation of individuals and the community as a whole. Within smaller
groups of individuals, such as the family (Hazen 2002), cultural identity helps explain
interspeaker variation, both within and across generations, for those speakers who would
otherwise share many of their sociological traits. As part of who a person is, cultural
identity influences the outcomes of other subidentities: being an expanded-identity
Native American is different from being a local-identity Native American. For these
reasons, the cultural identity of speakers should be considered for both large-scale
studies of social factors and more ethnographic studies of individual speakers.
Scholars of language variation must consider qualitative aspects of our subjects,
otherwise we will be caught looking at the machinery of variation without accounting
for the human lives that make it move in one direction or the other (Labov 2001).
Cultural identity, in Warren County as in Martha’s Vineyard, is a social factor that can
contribute greatly to studies of language variation.
