CONCLUSION. Recognizing the value of cultural identity benefits studies of boththe speech community and the individual. As a look at the tables reveals, adding culturalidentity to the mix allows important trends of language variation to emerge for thisrural speech community. The linguistic variation in Warren County correlates withseveral categories, including gender, age, and ethnicity. Were these the only independentvariables correlated with the data, then the opportunity for important analyses wouldbe missed; cultural identity must also be taken into consideration to better understandthe linguistic variation of individuals and the community as a whole. Within smallergroups of individuals, such as the family (Hazen 2002), cultural identity helps explaininterspeaker variation, both within and across generations, for those speakers who wouldotherwise share many of their sociological traits. As part of who a person is, culturalidentity influences the outcomes of other subidentities: being an expanded-identityNative American is different from being a local-identity Native American. For thesereasons, the cultural identity of speakers should be considered for both large-scalestudies of social factors and more ethnographic studies of individual speakers.Scholars of language variation must consider qualitative aspects of our subjects, otherwise we will be caught looking at the machinery of variation without accountingfor the human lives that make it move in one direction or the other (Labov 2001).Cultural identity, in Warren County as in Martha’s Vineyard, is a social factor that cancontribute greatly to studies of language variation.
