The chlorophyll in the apple peel is responsible for the ground
colour of the fruit. Both the red and green side of the apples showed
commensurate relative chlorophyll contents or NDVIndexes.
Outside fruits grown without hailnet accelerated chlorophyll
breakdown both on the green and red fruit side resulting in the
lowest chlorophyll content (Table 4). The chlorophyll content in the
fruit peel was maintained at a higher level under the coloured
hailnets, with an NDVI of 0.358 to 0.542 on the red fruit side, i.e.
13e42% more chlorophyll than in the control. These effects were
probably due to a combination of a) more advanced maturity and
ripening of the control fruit without hail protection (Table 1) and b)
larger light intensities outside, lower autumn temperature and
phytochrome-mediated gene expression for anthocyanin synthesis
