A MALAYSIAN company is set to open a dry ice cleaning service in Brunei and is looking to build a manufacturing plant following the establishment of its local office.
At the moment, Dri Ice Cleaning Experts (M) Sdn Bhd is completing the paper work to establish the Brunei office, said Managing Director Hj Abd Latiff Muhammad.
The company uses German-built technology to blast pellets of solid carbon dioxide, also known as dry ice, to clean heavy industrial machines and buildings.
The process is widely known as dry ice blasting.
As the carbon dioxide pellets turn back into the gas state almost immediately, it leaves no residue behind.
It is considered more environmentally friendly than other conventional methods of industrial cleaning such as sand-blasting or the use of water jet.
“If you use sand-blasting, you now also have the sand plus the contaminants to clean up,” said Hj Abd Latiff.
“If you use water, the water becomes contaminated and you cannot simply dispose of it,” he said in an interview at the BIMP-EAGA Integrated Culture Expo, where the company has a booth set up.
“If you use dry ice, if there’s one kilo of contaminants then you are only removing one kilo of contaminants without any additional residue,” he said.
Hj Abd Latiff said that conventional cleaning methods have the potential to produce a lot of toxic material.
He said the expansion into Brunei was due to the country’s interest in maintaining a green environment.
“There is still a lot of green here in Brunei, and it is the right time to start using green technology to help maintain it,” he said. “Other countries, they only introduce green technology when their environment is already polluted. It is best to start now.”
He said that the company plans to engage the main industrial players in Brunei as primary clients, including Brunei Shell Petroleum.
“Buildings can also be cleaned by dry ice,” he added.
The company plans to move in as soon as all the legal documentation is completed.
The Brunei entity will be known as Dri Ice Cleaning Experts Brunei Sdn Bhd.
He confirmed that the Malaysian firm has a local partner.
The company also intends to engage the engineering community in Brunei and train them in their principal office in Munich, Germany.
Once the company has set up shop, the next step is to establish a dry ice manufacturing plant, the official said.
He said that the plant will primarily manufacture dry ice for use in industrial cleaning, but added that it can be scaled up to meet demands in other industries, including aviation, food and shipping.
