The fermenterwas fed either un-gelatinized or gelatinized PPW according tothe operating parameter settings for a total of 40 d. Four conditionswere assessed in sequence: (i) SRT1.5, fed daily with un-gelatinizedPPW at a SRT of 1.5 d for 8 d; (ii) SRT2, fed daily with ungelatinizedPPW at a SRT of 2 d for 10 d; (iii) SRT1.5G, fed dailywith gelatinized PPW at a SRT of 1.5 d for 14 d; (iv) SRT1G, fedtwice a day with gelatinized PPW at a SRT of 1 d for 8 d. The fermentationbroth was sampled and analyzed according to methodsdescribed below. To ensure a steady state condition, only dataobtained after 5 cycles of each stage (at least 3 observations) wereprocessed and analyzed by SAS v9.3 software for the Tukey’s HSDtest at a probability level of p = 0.05
