The Milk Carton Boat Regatta is held on the Lielupe River in Latvia. The aim is to encourage a healthy lifestyle. The only requirements are that the boats must be made only of empty milk cartons and propelled only by human power, and that they must remain afloat. There are prizes for the fastest boat, the craziest crew and the most original craft.
The Todd River Race takes place in Alice Springs, Australia. It is the only dry-river race in the world. In 1993, the race was cancelled because there was water in the river. The 'boats' are bottomless and the crews race along the river bed carrying them. Teams dress in costumes and bombard one another with flour bombs and water cannons.
The Nanaimo-to-Vancouver Bathtub Race has been held in British Columbia, Canada since 1967. There are many safety rules for this race, which is 58 km long. All 'boats' must be the approximate size and shape of an old-fashioned bathtub, and the largest motor allowed is 8 hp. There is one person in each boat and they have to be at least 14 years old.
The Beer Can Regatta is held annually in Darwin, Australia. The boats are built of empty beer and soda cans, and powered by outboard motors. Many fall apart when launched, which is part of the entertainment. On the beach, there are activities for everyone, including the thong throwing contest. Some of the profits from this event go to local charities.
