They mostly serve to show the differences between a novel and other literary forms: such as storytelling and hyperfiction. A novel is: Created from the author's imagination. Structured for the convenience of the reader. Violence is toned down. No longer homeostatic.These characteristics are very broad, summing up many details noticeable in novels. The first one is one taken for granted, the ultimate truth of fiction. All fiction is created from someone's imagination whether they work alone or collaborate.The second characteristic concerns the composition of a novel. Unlike storytelling, a novel is written to be read. It depends on visual cues rather than verbal. Repetition is cut down because the reader can turn back the pages and reread what has happened.The third and fourth characteristics are concerned with what happened to the details of the subject matter of novel. The stories told in novels became less violent and less worried with the present setting. Novels could be set in the past, present, or future. They could be set in any country, civilization, or world.
