DISCUSSIONThis paper explored two components of the paradigm (Corbin &Strauss, 2007), the environmental factors (the context) and theintervening factors (intervening conditions) that impacted on patientparticipants' healing after their suicide attempt. In relation to theenvironment factors, findings demonstrated that patients who haveattempted suicide need to feel sheltered and safe with their internaland external environment. These findings support those of Maslow(1954), who discovered that human beings function using fivehierarchies of needs and that the need for safety is the second of thefive hierarchies. Therefore, the importance of creating a protectiveand secure environment was highlighted in this study by high risksuicidal individuals because they are ‘hyper-sensitive’ and ‘vulnerable’to the attitudes and behaviours of others. These findings agree withthose of Wiklander, Samuelsson, and Asberg (2003) and Holm andSeverinsson (2011). Findings from the current study revealed thatsuicidal individuals need to feel, protected and comfortable in theenvironment during their healing process. A protective environmentnot only meant that the external environment was safe (no dangerousobjects, a secure room) but also that the internal environment felt safe(stress free, stable and calm) corresponding with the findings ofBrock, Gurekas, Gelinas, and Rollin (2009) and Chi (2011).
