Speed plays another role in determining right of way on multiple lane roads. When changing lanes on a multiple lane road the car moving from the left to the right has the right of way. Speed plays a role here because of the general rule that slower traffic drives in the right lane and faster traffic drives in the left lane. The idea here is that if a car needed to slow down to respond to other cars then the slower moving car could achieve this easier than a faster moving car. Despite these right of way rules and speed concepts, the driver changing lanes on a multiple lane road not only has to worry about cars in the next lane but, also cars in the next lane over.
