The Disadvantages of social Media
Social media is a great way to connect with friends for many reasons. First, frequent Facebook users can experience negative feelings which have become known as “Facebook depression.” According to John Wood (2012), “The number one cause of Facebook depression is a lack of healthy socializing in the real world.” People must balance their online time with face-to-face meetings offline. It is very important to have direct relationships instead of communicating only through texts, Facebook updates, and phone calls. Second, spending too much time online, especially on Facebook, takes valuable time away from other activities. We should go to museums, taking hikes, visit relatives and eat family meals together. Smith (2013) reports that “twenty-two percent of teens log on to their favourite social media site more than twelve times a day.”(page 22) Everybody should take a break from technology because our greatest successes and most memorable happy moments happen offline, in the real world. The last, it is also important to remember that social media sites are safe. People can exaggerate and even lie about themselves online, and it is difficult to know who we can trust. However, it is probably a good idea never to give personal details or arrange offline meetings with strangers. Also, you should never give your credit card or bank details to anyone you meet online.
In conclusion, social media sites are useful but we must not forget that there are some dangers.
