captive P. troglodytes, the timings of fusion in captive P. paniscus are earlier than P. troglodytes for seven out
of the 10 comparisons in Table 4 and are never later.
More information is clearly needed on individuals of
known ages, and through standardized growth assessment
methods.
When chronological fusion times of captive P. paniscus
are compared with those of wild Taı¨ female P. troglodytes,
captives consistently show an earlier age for
maturation of skeletal elements although data are not
numerous (Table 4). Photographs of representative individuals
are shown in Figures 1–4.
