The Club set the tests (‘Criteria for Competency’) which trainees were required to pass in order to qualify as Mate, or Skipper (Restricted) or Skipper (Unrestricted) on ‘BP’. They were required to serve for certain periods on the water including in heavy weather. The training included locating a destination by dead-reckoning, covering a search area, taking bearings, and locating a ‘lost’ boat, etc. After this they were required to pass the Australian Volunteer Coastguard Seamanship course. Skippers were also given special training for nighttime emergency patrols and co-ordinated search and rescue work, in conjunction with the Harbourmaster and Victoria Police. These skippers learned the about the bay and its reefs, tidal flows and navigation aids
very thoroughly, so that in going to assist others the patrol boat itself was always out of danger. When WYC
became a training establishment on behalf of the Australian Yachting Federation (AYF), the Club was able to
issue ‘AYF Patrol and Rescue Boat Handling Certificates’ to successful skippers.

The Club mengatur tes ( 'Kriteria untuk Kompetensi') yang peserta diminta untuk lulus agar memenuhi syarat sebagai Mate, atau Skipper (Restricted) atau Skipper (tidak terikat) pada 'BP'. Mereka diminta untuk melayani untuk jangka waktu tertentu di atas air termasuk dalam cuaca berat. Pelatihan ini termasuk lokasi tujuan dengan mati-perhitungan, meliputi area pencarian, mengambil bantalan, dan menemukan sebuah 'hilang' perahu, dll Setelah ini mereka diharuskan untuk lulus Australia Volunteer Coastguard Bahari saja. Nakhoda juga diberi pelatihan khusus untuk patroli darurat malam hari dan terkoordinasi pencarian dan penyelamatan bekerja, dalam hubungannya dengan Harbourmaster dan Polisi Victoria. Nakhoda ini belajar tentang bay dan terumbu, arus pasang surut dan alat bantu navigasi
yang sangat teliti, sehingga dalam akan membantu orang lain kapal patroli itu sendiri selalu keluar dari bahaya. Ketika WYC
menjadi suatu bentuk pelatihan atas nama Yachting Federasi Australia (AYF), klub bisa
mengeluarkan 'AYF Patroli and Rescue Boat Penanganan Sertifikat' untuk nakhoda sukses.
