Dental caries develop due to an increase in strongly acid ogenicand aciduric Gram-positive bacteria while common forms of periodontaldisease are linked to anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria insubgingival plaque. While caries and periodontitis are bacterial diseases,Wade (2013) makes the case that they are not infectiousdiseases sensu stricto because they result from a complex interactionbetween the commensal microbiota, host susceptibility andenvironmental factors such as diet and smoking. Periodontitis, inparticular, appears to result from an inappropriate inflammatoryreaction to the normal microbiota, exacerbated by the presence ofsome disease-associated bacterial species.
