Familial risk factors for the development of GAD are both genetic and environmental. Children with an anxiety disorder are more likely to have a parent with an anxiety disorder than those who do not, regardless of parenting style.13 Family factors that put a preadolescent at higher risk for GAD are family interactions that include high amounts of rejection or are highly enmeshed; both very high and very low levels of family adaptability are also associated with GAD.
