Biological diversity can be considered at four spatial scales(Whittaker 1975): the broad, biogeographic regional scale(&-diversity); the landscape scale, such as a large watershed(y-diversity); the diversity between different ecosystems withina local landscape (P-diversity); and the within-stand orecosystem scale (a-diversity). In the past, the concept ofdiversity has been used in relation to the presence and (or)abundance of plant species, but can also be applied to differentaspects of the forested landscape such as structure, geneticcomposition, successional processes, and processes such asnutrient cycling (Franklin 1984). The effects of management onbiodiversity has become a major consideration for resourcemanagers (Burton et al. 1992).
