The common element in the different terms and definitions is the move beyond simple dissemination of knowledge to use of knowledge. Knowledge translation is about ensuring that decision makers at all levels of the health system (consumers, patients, practitioners, managers, and policy makers) are aware of, and can access and use research evidence to inform health-related decision making. Knowledge creation, distillation, and dissemination are not sufficient on their own to ensure evidence informed decision making.
