The visible Infrared Imaging Radiom

The visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite(VIIRS) flown on the Suomi National Polaer-Orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite, carries a low-light imaging Day/Night Band( DNB) radiometer. DNB data have very high sensitivity to anthropogenic light sources at night, especially useful for observing the activity of maritime vessels. This is t he first study validated VIIRS-DNB fishing vessel detection with reference data. We persent results for three species in Northwest Pacific Ocean: Neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartramii), Japanese common squid (Trodarodes pacificus), and Pacific saury (Cololabis saira). The VIIRS detections indicating of fishing boat positions were validated using location reported by fisheman. the DNB boat counts always exceeded the number of boats with reported location, which indicated that DNB data provides a more comprehensive depiction of fishing activity. Combing the VIIRS data with boat location from Vessel Monitoring Systems(VMS), sea surface temperature and ocean chlorophyII data could from the basis for future fisheries management and information system
