Based on the reported therapeutic activities of ursolicacid (anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative andhepatoprotective, etc.6), β-sitosterol (anticancer,estrogenic, hypolipidemic, etc.7), lupeol (antiinflammatory,anticancer, antimicrobial,hepatoprotective, cadioprotective activity, etc.8) andgallic acid (antioxidant, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory,anti-mutagenic, anti carcinogenic, apoptotic and woundhealing, etc.9); chromatographic characterization of C.cainito leaves was carried out in terms of thesetriterpenoids (ursolic acid, β-sitosterol and lupeol) andphenolic compound (gallic acid) content. Further, in orderto evaluate safety of C. cainito leaves, acute oral toxicitystudy (as per OECD guideline no. 420) was conducted inAlbino Wistar rats.MATERIALS AND METHODSChemicals and reagentsUrsolic acid, β-sitosterol, lupeol and gallic acid (98 %purity each) were procured from Sigma Aldrich ChemicalCompany, (Steinheim, Germany). Chemicals of analyticalgrade were purchased from Merck Specialties PrivateLimited, Mumbai.
