Nitric oxide (NO) was shown to be a central neurotransmitter and to act as a secondmessenger in the central nervous system. There are several reports of the relationshipbetween NO and pain processing in the brain and the spinal cord. Acetylcholine andmorphine induce analgesia via activation of the arginine-NO-cGMP pathway. Guanylatecyclase activity in the brain is markedly stimulated by NO, generated from L-arginine orprovided through an exogenous source. The transdermal nitroglycerine patch has beenrelated to NO formation during degradation of organic nitrates.
