Conceptual model and hypotheses
The conceptual model shown in Figure 1 adopts the antecedents and consequences of burnout logic proposed by Singh et al. (199Œ), while replicating and extending the emotional exhaustion conceptualization offered by Babakus et al. (1999)[1]. Our model extends their model by including intrinsic motivation as an antecedent of burnout, examining the complete burnout construct, and considering several additional paths. Importantly, our conceptualization is a substantial departure from a direct replication of the Babakus et al. (1999) research. The supporting rationale for the hypotheses which are supported by empirical findings in recent, related research (e.g. Babakus et al., 1999, Singh et al., 199Œ) is briefly presented in summary form and is included for completeness. The rationale for hypothesized relationships which do not have as much support in the literature is more thorough.
