New Public Management and Its Critics
In assessing the consequences and possible future
prospects of NPM, we shed some light on related discourses
that can be interpreted as a critical response to
the NPM-driven overhaul of established civil service
systems. This concluding section looks, in turn, at three
potentially tense relations between the major thrust of
the NPM agenda, on the one hand, and essential concepts
and values of public administration on the other:
the impact on public-service ethics, the problems of
accountability, the tensions between the role of citizens
and customers.
