Conclusions: The results were consistent with the hypothesesoutlined in Flege’s (1995) speech learning model in that thephonological skills of ELLs increased over time and as afunction of age of arrival and time. Thus, speech-languagepathologists (SLPs) also should expect phonological skills inELLs to increase over time, as is the case in monolingualchildren. SLPs can use the longitudinal and connected-speechresults of this study to interpret their assessments of thephonological skills of ELLs.
