An alternative view of where the line between business and society rests was posited by
Grit (2004) who challenged the question of the responsibilities of multiple institutions
and raised the concern that when business and society tackle issues, with so many hands
involved, no one is really responsible. Grit (2004) makes the distinction that society
elects its political leaders but that business managers are appointed, not elected; therefore, interests may align with shareholders, not stakeholders.
