In order to obtain the necessaryamount of energy, hummingbirds can select and protect therichest food patches available at an area (Loss and Silva 2005).Normally, sugar concentrations in the nectar of the flowersvisited by hummingbirds vary between 20–25% (Roberts 1996),and experimental manipulations revealed that hummingbirdsprefer sugar concentrations higher than 35% (Tamm and Gass1986, Roberts 1996, López-Calleja et al. 1997). However, thispreference was observed only when the nectar was collectedduring repeated licking (Kingsolver and Daniel 1983). Thus, inexperiments with artificial flowers (hummingbird feeders), it isexpected that hummingbirds forage more in feeders that had higher sucrose concentration, since energy intake is greater inthese feeders and the volume of nectar is large enough to permitrepeated licking cycles.
