Although fluoride-related exostoses generally presentin a relatively diffuse (hyperostotic) manner(e.g. Shupe et al., 1963), the well-defined, multipleand relatively smooth exostoses affecting predominantlylong bones, of both the hind- and forelimbs, and ribs appear similar to those described in the metatarsiof sheep after elevated fluoride from volcaniceruption in Iceland (Roholm, 1934, 1937), afterexperimental administration of sodium fluoride to acalf (Roholm, 1937) and in a small number of case reportsof ‘wine fluorosis’ in man (Soriano, 1952, 1968).The affected metatarsi of sheep were measuredretrospectively and contained 4,400 and20,600 mg F/g ashed bone, for cortex and exostosis, respectively (Roholm, 1937).
