Estimates of the prevalence of depression duringpregnancy vary depending on the criteria used, butcan be as high as 16% or more women symptomaticand 5% with major depression [2]. Firm estimates forprenatal anxiety do not exist, nor is there agreementabout appropriate screening tools, but past studiessuggest that a significant portion of women experienceprenatal anxiety both in general and abouttheir pregnancy [1&&,3]. Evidence of high exposureto stress in pregnancy is more widely available, atleast for certain subgroups of women. For example,a recent study of a diverse urban sample foundthat 78% experienced low-to-moderate antenatalpsychosocial stress and 6% experienced highlevels [4]. Some of the stressors that commonlyaffect women in pregnancy around the globe arelow material resources, unfavorable employmentconditions, heavy family and household responsibilities,strain in intimate relationships, and pregnancycomplications.
