This study reviews and summarises all confirmed cases
of SVC recorded by Cefas FHI between 1977 and the last
reported case prior to the UK achieving SVC free status
in 2010. A case was defined as any site that one or
more samples tested positive for SVCV by cell culture and
was confirmed by PCR. For each case the date of occurrence
and type of site infected were recorded. Data from
1999 onwards was compiled from the Live Fish Movement
Database (LFMD) which is used and maintained by Cefas
and the Environment Agency (EA) to store fish health monitoring
data, records of fish movement between farms and
fisheries, and imports to fish farms, traders and fisheries in
England and Wales. Information on cases occurring prior to
1999 was compiled from paper records held by the FHI. Less
information was available for this period; the study therefore
focuses predominantly on the situation post 1999.
