Education and training can no longer be seen as
a one time effort. Knowledge and skills acquisitions
must be viewed as an ongoing process throughout a
person’s career. This has been recognised by the professional
institutes, where there is increased emphasis
on Continued Professional Development. It is also
in this light that Competency Based Training (CBT)
should be considered, especially in applied agricultural
meteorology. In some countries it involves
a shift from an ‘Educational’ model to a ‘Market’
model where training is based on the requirements
of the customer (the farming community) and the
demonstration of ‘skills’. Educational and vocational
training initiatives in meteorology have recently been
reviewed by Mottram (1995).
