Slaves weren't the only people considered less than human in the 19th century. Consider the case of William Apess , 1798-1839, Pequot Indian. William Apess was born on January 31, 1798, near Colrain, Massachusetts, and attended primary school from age five to eleven. He was an outspoken advocate (Links to an external site.) of civil rights for Native Americans. He was also one of the first Indian autobiographers. What if people who looked like you or were your age were considered outcasts in this day and age? What would your life be like? What rights do you have now that would be gone?
