The computer attributes discussed above can be used to quantify the comparison between mainframes, minicomputers and microcomputers. Table 1 shows a number of computer attributes and values for the three computer categories. As a rule of thumb, there is approximately a factor of ten difference between microcomputers and minicomputers and a factor of ten difference between minicomputers and mainframes. While there are exceptions to these numbers they provide a useful overview of computer capabilities. Another important measure of computer size is processing speed. The processing speed is affected by such conditions as the type of program being run,the number of users on the system and the programming language being used. For the purposes of this paper it is sufficient to state that processing speed approximately follows the factor of ten relationship discussed above.
