The front facade is met by a large and mostly open field, which provides space for large gatherings of people. The unobstructed view from this field to the Reichstag makes one feel very small compared to the scale and weight of the facade . There are not many intermediate scale objects provided to bridge the gap between human scale and building scale. The use of massive scale and neoclassical decoration gives a sense of formality on the exterior of the build- ing. The power and dominance expressed on the exterior is toned down once the visitor reaches the interior space. The interior offers visitors a sense of mutual respect between them and the government; this is achieved by allowing people the chance to access the heart of the Reichstag (the auditorium and the transparent dome). This subconsciously creates a feeling of trust and mutual respect from the visitor to the Government. In terms of flexibility, the Reichstag is very accommodating to both the public and pri- vate while also serving a very clear purpose. The Reichstag is Germany’s top forum of delibera- tion and debate, where national and international policies are formed, removed, and amended. This forum is also open to the public, and the auditorium space has seating available to citizens who want to sit in on the deliberation. Once again the building’s concept of transparency in government shines through in all aspects of the design work.
