Summary of the evidence. A meta-analysis of 12 observational studies and randomized control trials (RCTs) showed that continued use of antimicrobials for infections other than CDI is significantly associated with an increased risk of CDI recurrence ( 47 ). A retrospective review of 246 patients treated during the years 2004 – 2006 also confirmed an independent association of non- CDI antimicrobial use with recurrence but only when non-CDI antimicrobials were given aft er CDI therapy was completed ( 48 ). In light of this consistent observational evidence, exposure to antibiotics other than those intended to treat CDI should be avoided unless absolutely indicated.
