Sharapova’s representatives had been busy preparing a lengthy document which they released yesterday in support of her case. They emphasised that meldonium is almost ubiquitous in Russia, with 30-40 million units consumed every year, so that it stands almost on a par with aspirin in the US. They also criticised the lack of signposting provided by the ITF about meldonium’s change of status on Jan 1, comparing it to the more visible notices supplied by the International Weightlifting Federation and the Russian Skating Union. Yet there is no statutory requirement for governing bodies to do anything beyond making the banned list available to athletes.
