The T8-L1 intercostal arteries are important for the
vascular supply of the lower portion of the spinal
cord. The great artery of Adamkiewicz (Fig. 7) usually
arises from a left intercostal artery in the T8-L1
region. This artery then divides into a small upper
anterior spinal artery and a larger lower spinal artery,
which supplies the anterior portion of the lower
spinal cord. The concept of a single Adamkiewicz
artery is debated because the artery can be identified
in only 86% of individuals by angiography and it may be double in certain patients
