The descending thoracic aorta gives branches tothe pericardium, bronchi, chest wall, and esophagus.Bronchial arteries vary in number, size, andorigin. The usually single right bronchial arterydoes not originate directly from the thoracic aorta, but rather from the third posterior intercostal arteryor from the upper left bronchial artery. Two leftbronchial arteries usually arise from the descendingaorta, the upper near the fifth thoracic vertebra andthe lower below the level of the left main bronchus.A few small pericardial and mediastinal branchesalso originate from the descending aorta and irrigatethe posterior aspect of the pericardium andareolar tissues and lymph nodes of the posteriormediastinum. From the lower thoracic descendingaorta arise branches, which are distributed posteriorto the superior surface of the diaphragm
