Hello Mr. ONG Ying,
I am Ms. Amoakohene and I teach Weijing Liang’s Speaking and Listening class, Pronunciation class, and Spelling and Writing class. Here is a list of class work, homework, and materials for the week divided by class. Since it’s the week before spring break and Weijing’s absence affects my normal teaching process, I can only provide a few materials. It’s not easy to explain everything because some of the work requires the student to be physically in the classroom. Also, some of the work comes from three textbooks. Hopefully he brought them to China. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Speaking and Listening
· We’ve been studying adverbs of frequency. Please see the attached PowerPoint.
· Adverbs of Frequency Student Survey-Students wrote 7 questions using, “How often do you…?” Next, they interviewed two classmates. For example, How often do you eat pizza? Student says, I usually eat pizza or I always eat pizza. Weijing would write the adverb in the box. After he writes down 14 adverbs based on the interview, he needs to write 14 complete sentences that answer his initial questions.
· Mr. Bean’s Daily Routine: We watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwmIDHm3kOk and students answered questions on the worksheet (see attached)
· Adverbs of Frequency Quiz (see attached)
· We will learn about making ‘small talk’ (see attached PowerPoint). Students practice making small talk (I attached a small talk cards worksheet)
· Weather/Suggestions and Recommendations-Students learn vocabulary and phrases related to talking about the weather and making suggestions and recommendations. (See attached PowerPoint) Towards the end of the PPT there should be an activity about writing a dialogue about the weather. The dialogue is Weijing’s homework.
· We may or may not begin talking about Feelings (adjectives), I’m hot, cold, tired, etc. I think his class has already been learning this in Mr. Ki’s class. Please have him study adjectives for feelings.
Pronunciation
· Schwa Vowel Sound Quiz-For numbers 1-17, Weijing must write the vocabulary words and circle the letter(s) that have the schwa vowel sound. Numbers 18 and 19 he must write the correct preposition and circle the letter(s) with the schwa vowel sound. Number 20, he must write how many syllables are in the word.
· Unit 9-Schwa: This will probably be too difficult without someone actually teaching this to him, but please have him do what he can. (See attached)
· Textbook: “Sounds Great” Book 1 by Beverly Beisbier. Hopefully Weijing brought his textbook with him. He is responsible for Lessons 2 and 3 (Short and Long Vowel I and Word Stress: Two Syllable Patterns (pgs 7-26). Some of the material requires working with a partner. If you have a tutor for him, that person can do the exercises with him.
· Homework: Make sure that he completes “The Same Sound” worksheets- numbers 2, 3, and 4. (See attached)
· Homework: Short O Vowel Words handout. This handout lists different short o vowel words and sentences. He is responsible for knowing the meaning of the words he doesn’t know.
Spelling and Writing
· Present Continuous: Mr. Bean at the Department Store Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YrSmOEFKHE students have a worksheet in front of them (see attached) with different present continuous sentences. For example, ‘He’s brushing his hair.’ First, review all of the sentences to make sure he knows what they say. Next, watch the video. Weijing must raise his hand every time he sees Mr. Bean do something in the video that matches a sentence on the worksheet. He must also say the sentence out loud.
· Present Simple versus Present Continuous: Students fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb in parentheses. Students must either write the verb in the present simple tense or present continuous. (15 questions)
· Quiz: Present Simple versus Present Continuous: This is similar to the worksheet, but it will be graded. Some of the sentences are questions, so he needs to make sure he includes the helping verb “do.”
· Homework: Workbook “Side by Side: Activity and Test Prep Workbook” Book 1-He needs to complete pages 2-20. Some of the exercises are for listening, which we are doing in class. Again, if he has a tutor, have the tutor practice the listening with him. There is a CD included.
· “Side by Side” Textbook Book 1-Reading and Questions pgs 22-23. For homework, he needs to write a story about the Martinez family (pg 23)
· Workbook “Side by Side: Activity and Test Prep Workbook” Book 1: Diagnostic Test Chapters 1-4.
· “Side by Side” Textbook Book 1: pg 25, Part 1, “Side by Side Gazette” Weijing reads and writes his own Internet message (follow the “Global Exchange” example). Part 2, “Build Your Vocabulary” Weijing studies the instruments, sports, and games (future quiz material), pg 26, review greetings.
· Chapter 4 pgs 27-34
