Besides the spatial pattern, temporal compositing could also induce an overestimationerror, by increasing the size of a burnt area, due to the presence ofco-registration errors between daily images (Roy 2000). We tested the co-registrationaccuracy between daily VGT images for the compositing period 31 May–9 Juneover 42% of the study area. Although we found the accuracy to be better than twopixels for 73% of the tested area, the effect of temporal compositing should alwaysbe taken into consideration. However, overestimation errors due to image to imagemisregistration cannot be avoided when working with temporal series’ of satelliteimages.
