world(UN WWAP,2003). Lackofadequatesanitationcauseswaterresourcescontaminationworldwide,makingit
oneofthemostsignificant causesofwaterpollution.Worldwide,2.5billionpeoplelivewithoutpropersanitation
(UNICEF,2009). Insomeregionsoftheworld,morethan50%ofnativefreshwater fish speciesareatriskof
extinction,andthisisalsothecasefornearlyone-thirdoftheworld'samphibians(Vié, Hilton-Taylor,&Stuart,
2009).
Over 70%ofthepeoplewholacksanitation,or1.8billionpeople,liveinAsia.InChina,whichhasarapidly
growingeconomywaterisascarceresourceasjust8%oftheworld'sfreshwaterhastomeettheneedsof22%ofthe
world'spopulation.However,33%ofindustrialwastewater,and70%ofhouseholdsewageisuntreatedanddirectly
releasedintoriversandlakes,while80%ofChina'scitieshavenosewagetreatmentfacilitiesandwatersuppliesin
90%ofthecitesarecontaminated.EnvironmentaldegradationcostsChinanearly9%ofitsannualgrossdomestic

Nowadays,morethan700emergingpollutants,theirmetabolitesandtransformationproducts,arelistedaspresent
in theEuropeanaquaticenvironment(www.norman-network.net).Emergingpollutants(EPs)aredefined assynthetic
or naturallyoccurringchemicalsthatarenotcommonlymonitoredintheenvironmentbutwhichhavethepotentialto
entertheenvironmentandcauseknownorsuspectedadverseecologicaland(or)humanhealtheffects.Insomecases,
releaseofemergingpollutantstotheenvironmenthaslikelyoccurredforalongtime,butmaynothavebeen
recognizeduntilnewdetectionmethodsweredeveloped.Inothercases,synthesisofnewchemicalsorchangesinuse

EPs arecurrentlynotincludedin(inter)nationalroutinemonitoringprogrammesandtheirfate,behaviorand
