From the muscles with hemorrhage and the controls, tissue was sampled (app. 1 × 1 × 1 cm) for histological evaluation. Control muscle biopsies were taken from the same location as the hemorrhagic ones. This tissue was immersion fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for 3–5 days at 20 °C. After fixation, it was processed through graded con- centrations of alcohols and xylene, and finally embedded in paraffin wax. Sections of 4–5 μm were cut and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE). Samples from the vertebral column (where some muscle tis- sue was still attached) were immersion fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for 6 days. After fixation, they were decalcified in an aqueous solution containing 3.3% formaldehyde and 17% formic acid for 4 weeks. Then the tissues were processed for histology in the same way as the muscle tissue (Bancroft & Gamble, 2008).
3.1. Gross lesions
The hemorrhages were in all cases localized at the tip (the cranial part) of m. psoas major. They appeared on the muscle surface as single, circular hemorrhages and measured on average 2.48 ± 1.40 (SD) cm in diameter. When dissecting the tenderloins, the hemorrhages extend- ed up to 2 cm into the depth of the muscle. Furthermore, they extended up to 6 cm parallel and along the muscle fibers, giving the hemorrhages an elongated shape beneath the surface. In all five lumbar regions of the vertebral columns, where hemorrhage was found in the corresponding tenderloin, displacement of the column was present.
