Choice feeding integrates well with the use of whole grains and farm-raised feeds that promote nutrient cycling, a key tenant of ecological agriculture [39]. Raising feed crops on the farm is a way to potentially reduce the use of expensive organic feed, as well as reducing processing costs and transport of feed. The Choice diet selected by birds at the end of the growing period was less expensive than the Formulated diet ($0.58/kg vs. $0.66/kg, respectively; Table 4). Average cost of feed per kg of live weight gain was $1.26 vs. $1.06 for Formulated and Choice, respectively. Economic viability is a key part of sustainability.Table 4. Costs of Formulated diet and Choice selection feed during the start (28 to 34 d) and end (56 to 64 d) of the growing period.
