In our class, we have gone over the conventions of fiction storytelling: plot, setting, character, Flashback (pg. 11), Foreshadowing (pg. 26), Conflict (pg. 50),External conflict (pg. 9), Internal conflict (pg. 9),Protagonist, Antagonist, Mood (pg. 55), Allegory (pg 74), and Dialect (pg. 65). Additionally, we have read Stephen King’s The Mist in order to further understand the conventions of fiction and to critically think about how the novella represents our reality. Now it is time to write an essay (YAY!), where you will demonstrate your knowledge of the above information. Here are three options for essay 1: The News Article and the Novella:For this option, you must discuss how The Mist (novella) reflects the incident in the article you have selected. In other words, how does the novella reflect the world we live in—specifically, the world described in your article? For your thesis, tell me how the novella represents the incident in the article. Then, create three main ideas in order to create your body paragraphs (each body paragraph should contain one main idea) This must be done in a 5 paragraph essay (introduction (with thesis), body paragraphs, and conclusion). And you must use quotes from the book and article to support your ideas. The Endings:For this option, you must discuss the differences between the endings of the novella and the film. The best way to begin this option is by asking yourself, what theme does each ending contain? Then, describe the differences between the endings. Furthermore, you will want to discuss what each ending attempts to convey to its readers. In other words, what does each ending say about the world you live in? Make sure to include characters, settings, internal and external conflict, allegory, and mood for this section. (I think this will help you develop your ideas). This must be done in a 5 paragraph essay (introduction (with thesis), body paragraphs, and conclusion). And you must use quotes from the book and examples from the film to support your ideas. Analysis of The Mist as an Allegory:This option will allow you to analyze the novella. In other words, is the novella an allegory for the way things are in the real world? If so, how do you know? What do the characters say about real people? What do the monsters symbolize? What does violence say about us as humans? What happens to laws and rules after a horrific event, and what does that say about our laws and rules? This must be done in a 5 paragraph essay (introduction (with thesis), body paragraphs, and conclusion). And you must you quotes from the book to support your analysis. *First draft of the essay is due on Thursday, October 27 Essay Requirements: • The essay must be 650 to 800 words.
