In addition, AT&T’s management team is aggressively pursuing growth in the wireless and wireline data services arenas in the US. A series of acquisitions including Cellular One, Centennial, Wayport, and Qualcomm following the mega-merger of AT&T and BellSouth in 2006 added wireless subscribers and spectrum to the company’s business. Despite what many consider to be a near-saturated US market, the number of AT&T’s wireless subscribers swelled from 60.9 million at the end of 2006 to 95.5 million at the end of 2010. As previously mentioned, AT&T is investing in network upgrades to cover most major cities in wireless technology in calendar year 2011. The company is also expanding its fiber optics network-based Internet access and video services under the U-serse brand. U-verse is an important growth area where management is expected to focus its efforts in the future. AT&T management believes these services will further differentiate the company as a full-service telecommunications and media firm.
