Based on biological signalThe bioreceptor or biological recognition element is thesignificant distinguishing feature of a biosensor. The bioreceptorcompromises the recognition system of a sensortowards the target analyte. Essentially it is crucial for abioreceptor to be selective and sensitive towards the specifictarget analyte to prevent interference by another substancefrom the sample matrix (Lowe, 2007). Generally biosensors canbe classified by the type of biological signalling mechanismthey utilize. The biological signalling used by biosensors can bedivided into five major mechanisms (Fig. 3). Here, we willdiscuss each of these mechanisms in detail and theirapplication.
