Our results imply that the increasing importance of distance observed in trade data is related to greater sourcing of homogeneous and high-trade-cost goods from near countries
This could reflect improved information leading to better (closer and lower cost) matches between exporters and importers, especially for homogeneous and bulky goods, where the source of the goods and personal contact are likely to be less important, and relative trade costs are more important.
