That cautionary note aside, our penchant for the useof song lyrics in our instruction has not been adverselyaffected by the findings of our analysis. Rather, weapproach songs with renewed vigor and offer a newlens with which others can view them. Specifically,we recommend that any teacher, professor, or policymakerconsider the complex nature of teaching situationsbefore discussing songs as texts. For researchers,we recommend an agenda that will empirically test the procedures we implemented to understand the naturea Stuart Hall (as well as other scholars’) reading of curriculummaterials can have on teaching and learning.For policymakers, we recommend a reasonable but cautiousinspection of songs to be included in curriculumand simultaneously advocate for increased resources tofurther understand these approaches for the teaching ofthe discipline and the language of English.
